Here's how you know whether you've crossed the line into addictive behavior:
- Your interpersonal relationships are suffering
- Your finances and or job may be in jeopardy
- Your health may be suffering
- Getting your 'fix' may take precedence over all other areas of your
life
- The substance or process is not a choice, but a compulsion
- Personal appearance is neglected (eg. gaining or losing weight)
- You loose interest in activities or hobbies that you once enjoyed
How addicts deceive themselves:
- "I never fall down drunk and I always show up for work."
- "So what if I work out for two hours before work and three hours after
work, exercise is good for me!"
- "So what if he has a bit of a temper and a drinking problem. If I don't
love him and try to help him, who will?"
- "I can quit whenever I want to!"
An addiction is a behavior or substance that dominates the addict's life
and becomes more important than family, friends or work.
